Apparently the ancient Mesopotamians discovered the secret to life long before we started looking for it. In The Dialogue of Pessimism, a master asks his slave whether he should drive to the palace, start a revolution, etc. Each time the slave gives a good reason why he should, the master changes his mind. Finally the master asks what is good for man. His answer to this deep question is “To have my neck broken, and yours, and to be thrown into the river.” Personally, I prefer “42.”
